In an ideal world every child would be born with the same life chances. We all realise, sadly, that is not reality. Auditory Verbal UK aims to eliminate the impact of deafness by providing children born deaf with the opportunity to learn to listen and speak to ensure inclusion and equality with hearing children.
Our daughter Grace, as many of you know, was born with profound hearing loss. She had cochlear implant surgery at 8 months old. Although this amazing technology gave her the ability to hear, she had to learn to listen and speak. She was fortunate that we had heard of AVUK and that therapy started as early as possible to give her the best chance to close any learning and development gap quickly. Grace is 7 years old, attends Pembridge Hall, a London mainstream school, swims, dances, sings, paints and is an eco-warrior! This outcome would not have been possible without the help, support and development strategy we received at AVUK.
